Glenforlsan is as rugged and as spectacular a loch as you could wish for. It's our joint largest hydropower station alongside Balgonie.
Where is it?
Glenforslan is almost the definition of 'the middle of nowhere'. West Lochaber clings to the fringes of western mainland Britain: due west there's nothing but mountains and the occasional loch; due east, there's nothing but the Atlantic between you and Newfoundland.
Glenforslan is only a stone's throw from another of our hydro schemes at Roshven and an hour's drive (or a hard day's march) from Fort William.
Site history
Glenforslan was a new hydropower scheme that utilised a pre-existing World War One era dam. It was completed in 2009.

The hydropower plant
Glenforlsan has a vertical Pelton turbine with an installed capacity of 500kW. It is a storage site, meaning the water for the turbine is drawn from the loch and released through a dam. As a result, the scheme can be turned on and off as long as there is water in the loch.
What’s the environmental impact?
Glenforlsan can produce 2,000MWh of electricty every year, which could power more than 600 'average' British homes.
